Maintenance Team Member - Full Time Stuart Hall School - Staunton, VA

Stuart Hall School is an independent Episcopal day and boarding school in Staunton, VA that serves students in grades 6-12. The School is currently seeking a dedicated individual to serve as a Maintenance Team Member . This role requires a reliable, proactive individual who takes pride in the nature of this work, treats people and the campus with respect, uses good judgment and common sense, and works well as part of a team. Previous maintenance experience is helpful but not required; the right candidate will be observant, willing to pitch in wherever needed, follow through on responsibilities, and interested in learning what it takes to maintain a school campus well.

About the Position

The Maintenance Team Member supports the daily care, maintenance, and operation of the school's buildings, grounds, equipment, and other physical assets. This is a hands-on position that includes a wide variety of work, from basic repairs and preventive maintenance to grounds care, event support, moving and setup needs, and other day-to-day operational tasks. Working under the direction of the Facilities Team Lead, this position carries out assigned work and supports the Facilities & Operations team in keeping the school safe, functional, well cared for, and welcoming for the entire school community.

This is a 12-month, full-time, hourly, non-exempt position paying $16-20/hour. Candidates bringing significant relevant maintenance experience, trade skills, certifications, or licensure may be considered for a higher starting rate. The Team Member reports to the Facilities Team Lead and will receive day-to-day direction from that role. The Maintenance Team Member may occasionally support projects or tasks assigned by the Director of Strategic Operations; such tasks will be coordinated with and communicated to the Team Lead to ensure clarity and alignment.

Responsibilities Include:

Facilities & Maintenance

• Perform assigned hands-on maintenance and repair work across campus, including basic building repairs, grounds upkeep, preventive maintenance, and general facilities work.
• Complete routine operational tasks such as trash removal, moving furniture and supplies, deliveries, event setup and breakdown, and other practical work needed to support the school.
• Complete assigned work orders and use the school's work order system.
• Learn to perform basic maintenance tasks safely and correctly, including simple plumbing repairs, painting and patching, hardware replacement, furniture repair, filter changes, basic exterior maintenance, and similar work.
• Follow the direction and priorities established by the Team Lead and communicate when additional materials, assistance, information, or outside expertise may be needed.
• Follow established safety, security, and operational procedures and promptly report hazards, damage, unsecured areas, equipment problems, or other concerns to the Team Lead.
• Help maintain the security of campus by properly securing buildings, rooms, gates, vehicles, tools, equipment, and maintenance spaces.
• Participate in grounds and seasonal work as assigned, including mowing, leaf removal, landscaping, snow and ice removal, gutter cleaning, and general exterior upkeep.
• Participate in larger projects during school breaks and summer months, including renovations, classroom and office moves, deep cleaning, preventive maintenance, and special campus projects.
• Participate in emergency response, severe-weather preparation, snow removal, and other urgent facilities work.
• Assist with the care of school vehicles and facilities equipment, including cleaning, basic inspections, transportation, and other assigned fleet-related tasks.
• Work occasional overtime, evenings, or weekends as required to support emergencies, campus operations, and special events, including school picnics, Family Weekend, Commencement, and other major events.
• Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to urgent after-hours facilities needs as assigned.
• Fill in as a backup school bus driver when coverage is needed (CDL not required).

• Ability to perform the essential physical functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, including prolonged standing and walking; bending, kneeling, and reaching; lifting and moving materials and equipment up to 50 pounds; performing manual labor such as furniture moves and snow removal; and working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, based on school needs.
• Valid driver's license required, as well as the ability to pass a background check.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Additional experience that candidates are encouraged to highlight, but not required to have:

• Previous maintenance, construction, landscaping, custodial, mechanical, or other hands-on work experience.
• Trade certifications, licenses, or formal training in areas such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, or related fields.
• Experience using hand tools, power tools, grounds equipment, or maintenance equipment.
• Experience working in a school, campus, residential, hospitality, or other service-oriented environment.
• Particular maintenance or trade skills the candidate would be interested in developing further over time.
